Leaving a Diffuser On Too Long: Risks and What to Do

Leaving a diffuser on longer than you need can make the scent feel overwhelming, especially in a small or poorly ventilated room. If you notice a headache, throat irritation, coughing, or discomfort, turn it off, get some fresh air, and use less oil or a shorter session next time.

Running a water-based diffuser after its reservoir is empty may also put unnecessary strain on the unit if it does not shut off automatically. Our team recommends turning it off when you leave the room or go to sleep unless its instructions specifically support unattended operation.

Start with a short session and stop once the room smells comfortable to you; you do not need to keep the diffuser running to maintain a strong scent. A smaller room, a sensitive nose, or other people sharing the space are good reasons to use less oil and take longer breaks between sessions.

Turn the diffuser off, unplug it before handling the reservoir, and let it cool if it feels warm. Empty any water you will not be using, then clean and dry the reservoir as directed so residue does not build up between uses.
